Operation Shadybrook, July 22-24, 2009
DECKERS - ARES District 24 received a request from the Salvation Army to provide communications
support in the Rampart Range area located on the western edge of Douglas County
on July 22nd, 2009.
Earlier in the week storms brought damaging winds and rain to the Denver Metro area and also caused several mudslides
near Deckers, including one that took out the camp kitchen at YMCA's Camp Shadybrook. Camp Shadybrook was
housing 260 youth campers at the time of the slide. Because the camp had no ability to prepare meals, the Salvation Army was asked to provide canteen and
feeding services for the camp.
The Deckers area is known to be a challenging place to provide communications;
it is surrounded by mountains and sits in the South Platte River Valley. No cell service is available in that area.
District 24 deployed members Eric Freund (KØEWF) and Flint Gatrell (NØFHG) that evening. Freund and Gatrell assisted with the setup of the
Salvation Army canteen vehicle and established communications, via UHF repeater, with the Salvation Army’s Emergency
Manager for Denver, Mike Gelski.
District 24 continued to operate shifts of 2 deployed operators, plus a remote net control station, for
two days. Operations concluded on the afternoon of July 24th, 2009.
This deployment taught the members of District 24 valuable lessons about
what may be required to facilitate reliable incident communications in an RF challenging environment.
